The United People's Party of Singapore

The United People's Party of Singapore is a political party established on 14 July 1962.
The party is one of the 4 oldest parties in Singapore which are the few established before Singapore's independence in 1965. (The other 3 are PAP, Workers' Party and PKMS.) The UPP was an opposition party with 3 seats in the legislative assembly from 1962 to 1963 under the People's Action Party government.
However, the party became dominant around Singapore's independence due to the harsh conditions for the opposition created by the ruling PAP.
In July 2009, a group of young politically aware citizens who hope to partake in Singapore politics have no intention to form a new party, so they decided to revive an old party. They chose UPP because of its rich history and the name was suitable to their cause. This year and month also marks the party's 44th anniversary.
A new party will add more parties in the long list of 24 parties. Many parties were allowed to register and left dormant without being dissolve. The PAP has used this to show the world that Singapore is a true democracy. The new blood of UPP does not believe in allowing this to happen because Singapore is not a full democracy but a semi-democracy at best.
The new UPP Central Executive Committee plans to process the application with to the Registrar of Societies and revamp the party's traditional "key" symbol with a new design. It will also amend its Chinese name from "人民统一党" to "人民联合党".
